OUR PRESENTERS

Jacqueline Ashby, Executive Director and Senior Vice President of City Year Buffalo is a dedicated leader committed to social justice and educational equity. With extensive teaching experience in both Canada and the US, including roles in Buffalo Public Schools and an adult education program, Jacqueline brings a wealth of diverse classroom expertise. At Journey’s End Refugee Services, she successfully led a team, expanding the adult education program to serve Buffalo’s newest residents in Western New York. Under her leadership, the program opened a new site, secured additional funding, including support from the New York State Department of Education, and advanced its mission to provide culturally responsive educational programming for diverse adult and English Language Learners, supporting them in achieving their goals.

Originally from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Jacqueline holds a bilingual Bachelor of Arts and a degree in urban adolescent education. Serving as the President-Elect of the New York Association of Continuing and Community Education, she actively works to enhance student access to inclusive community education programs across the state. Beyond her professional commitments, Jacqueline, a committed lifelong learner, enjoys travel, camping, biking, spending time with her four cats and dog, and exploring new restaurants in Western New York with her partner.

DJ Schier, Senior Manager for People and Operations at City Year Buffalo, is a lifelong learner who is strongly committed to and passionate about education and leadership development. Over the past 12 years, DJ has been working in higher education at various colleges in the Buffalo area, spending the last 8 at Villa Maria College where he was most recently the Dean of Students. He has served on multiple UNYCC Communities of Practice as well, including Title IX and the Western New York Diversity Officers. DJ is from the Hudson Valley region of NY and moved out of the Buffalo area for college back in 2007 and fell in love with the area. He earned his B.S. in Communications and Public Relations from SUNY Fredonia in 2011 and his M.S. in Higher Education and Student Affairs Administration in 2013 from Buffalo State College. In his free time, DJ enjoys spending time with his family, and friends, and playing with his 2 cats and his dog. He also enjoys relaxing with a good video game, especially JRPG’s and the Final Fantasy series.
